Not long ago, we assisted in an investigation into the suspected theft of $40,000 in cash from an office safe. Only three individuals had been given the combination to the safe. However, the owner suspected that at least one other person, who had not been given access, also knew the combination.
DNA analysis of the cash container revealed a mixture of DNA profiles. One of the profiles matched the owner; the other matched the (unauthorized) person the owner suspected of knowing the combination. During an interview, the suspect denied knowing the safe’s combination or having ever touched the cash container. When confronted with the information learned through the DNA testing, the suspect confessed to the theft. He later pled guilty to criminal charges and made full restitution.
This technology has been employed in a variety of investigations, including those to identify the source of anonymous letters, objects left in the workplace to harass fellow employees, and to challenge the authenticity of a codicil to a will.
